"I agreed that Thailand needs to rethink its research strategy to make it both realistic and cost-effective. The old academic networks patterned along Western lines are well established (and even tend to be self-perpetuating). Some elders are obsessed with sucking up funds to build Nobel-prize winning research groups on topics irrelevant to Thailand. . Mid-career researchers are comfortable doing things in a familiar pattern and are averse to change. That leaves young researchers, who need to have more options, and who needs encouragement and role models to break out of the mould. I think you, as well as some others, are providing this service. The crux of the matter is that we have to build up these alternatives to be on a par with classical research-for-publication-only, and allocating resources properly. This will take some time, but we are already on our way.
To look beyond this, Thailand is a small country with a large manufacturing and services sector, and a large population engaged in a dwindling agriculture sector. The political, business, and bureaucratic circles have their own ways of doing things. To come up with really useful R&D which can be utilized under these circumstances, the research question and the research process MUST be carefully developed. Only then can science and technology prove itself useful as a credible solution. I think this is one weak point in our entire research landscape, the art and science of research problem identification and development."
