the Longinus Spear
The spear that is piercing Lillith's chest is called the Longinus Spear. In Christian lore it is sometimes referred to as the Spear of Destiny. Longinus was the name of the soldier who pierced Christ's side with his spear, when Christ had been crucified. This act, of using a spear to ensure Christ was dead instead of the traditional method of breaking his legs, fulfilled the prophecy that said the son of God's bones would not be broken. The spear was said to have drawn water and blood from Christ's side. However, the legend of the spear doesn't end there.
Legend has it that whoever has the spear is ensured victory. But once they lose the spear, their defeat will soon follow. In Evangelion the spear is also the easiest way to destroy an angel, or an evangelion. In the films, the scene where the Longinus Spear is removed from Lillith has been changed. In the original tv show, nothing happened when the spear was removed. In the movie, however, Lillith almost immediately begins to regenerate when the spear is removed from her chest.
The actual origin of the spear within the eva universe, isn't fully explained. What the lance is made of, why it has such destructive properties when used against evangelions or angels, is unclear. In the episode where the lance is used against the fifteenth angel, Misato says they shouldn't use the spear because the contact between Adam and an angel will cause another second impact. This line suggests that the spear is somehow derived from Adam, although it is never explicitly stated. What is clear, is that the spear plays a significant role in Third Impact. It is impossible for it to occur without the use of the original spear.
One misconception with some people, seems to be that this is somehow the actual spear that pierced the side of Christ. As with many of the other religious symbols used in evangelion, the spear is probably named after the spear of longinus because it is capable of piercing divine beings.
